Businesses are increasingly embracing the use of personal devices for work, especially with more and more employees working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But corporate policies aren’t keeping up. Bitglass’ 2020 BYOD Report found that around 69% of employees are allowed to use personal devices to perform work functions and yet more than half (51%) of global organisations still don’t have a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policy in place, as per findings from the STX Next’s latest Global CTO Survey.
The STX survey revealed some interesting (and concerning) realities around how modern organisations approach cybersecurity, explains Maciej Dziergwa, chairman of STX Next.
“Unfortunately, it seems many still see security as a cost rather than an investment,” he says. “With remote working becoming one of the most tangible impacts of the coronavirus pandemic, most businesses do not have sufficient visibility of the devices used by employees, and whether these devices are secure enough for accessing company data. It is imperative businesses take measures to address these insufficiencies.”
The value of visibility
Once end users move beyond the “safety” of the office, they’re out in the wild. Understanding how BYOD, cybersecurity and remote work fit together is essential if businesses want to have the right measures in place to protect corporate data and to safeguard their employees. But simply having a policy is not enough. Businesses must have the right tools and processes in place to ensure that their policies are effective.
When talking about BYOD and remote work, you need to focus visibility. You cannot protect what you cannot see, as the saying goes. Some form of endpoint monitoring is a must but it must be deployed in good faith, to avoid any negative sentiment from employees. Again, a policy can only do so much. You need to have buy-in from key stakeholders and staff. If you just blindly create policies without chatting to your employees, your efforts will backfire.
And should anything go wrong, the right automated software can quickly find, diagnose and fix any problems without placing additional strain on the network.
