We are sure that you have heard about out-of-bundle rates. A topic that’s been in the news quite a bit over the last few months, out-of-bundle charges occur when you use data without activating a data bundle and get charged an elevated rate.
But how elevated is this rate?
According to a recent report, some local service providers were charging as much as 2 639% more for out-of-bundle data use. To put this percentage in perspective – if a 20GB data bundle costs R329, which works out to R0.02 per MB, out-of-bundle rates per MB are around R0.44. And if a 25GB prepaid bundle costs R1 250, or around R0.05 per MB, the out-of-bundle cost is just under R1.00 per MB.
These numbers may seem small, but if you’ve been downloading mails or browsing the web without realising that your data bundle has run out, you can rack up a sizable bill or deplete your airtime in a matter of minutes. While this situation might raise the ire of individual users, just imagine the potential consequences for enterprises responsible for hundreds of mobile contracts.
For big businesses with many employees, having to fork out extra money to cover out-of-bundle charges simply doesn’t make sense. Avoiding exorbitant mobile data bills caused when mobile users goes out of bundle means gaining greater visibility over your mobile environment. This is when cloud-based telecoms expense and lifecycle management (TEM) solutions, like OneView, come in handy.
If you’ve been following our blog, you will have come across Milo, our millennial, mobile employee. He almost lost his shot at a promotion when his data bundle ran out and he couldn’t connect with the client he desperately needed to contact. Obviously Milo is a fictional character but the situation he found himself in could very easily happen to anyone else in the workplace.
Here’s how OneView can help your organisation avoid out-of-bundle and ensure you always have the connectivity you need to get your job done.
User-friendly dashboard: We want to make it easier for mobile administrators to track and monitor spend across the enterprise. This is why we recently updated our OneView dashboard to make it easier for administrators to update and manage employee information. With this dashboard, administrators sitting in the office can easily load new data bundles for mobile workers, ensuring that no one incurs out-of-bundle charges.
Usage notifications: OneView’s burst alerts provide users with early warnings about sudden spikes in usage. So if a user forgets to connect to the corporate WiFi and starts running large software updates on their laptop using their 3G dongle, they’ll get an immediate notification about the sudden surge in data usage. Even though the user hasn’t reached 100% of his or her data cap, at the rate they are using data there is a high risk that they might exceed their bundle very quickly. These notifications make users aware of any usage irregularities and prevent overspending before it happens.
Greater visibility: When we created the OneView Lite App, we wanted to foster spend awareness by allowing employees to view their personal mobile spend. This drives down out-of-bundle spend. Users can load all company owned devices onto the OneView app, including mobile phones, tablets and dongles. This allows them to drill down into each device or SIM and receive real-time information around their bill, package and usage.
