When you buy a data bundle, you’re purchasing access to a specific amount of data at a reduced price. Should you use data that is not part of a data-bundle, that data is charged for at a premium.
2017 figures from the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA), published as part of its bi-annual Report on the Analysis of Tariff Notifications, an outline of the difference between data prices charged in-bundle versus out-of-bundle. According to the figures, the percentage variance between in-bundle and out-of-bundle charges for 500MB of data ranged between 110% and 910%. That’s a significant difference.
So, what can you do to avoid wasting money due to out-of-bundle data charges? Here are a few tips:
- Disable device updates without permission: Whenever your device wants to do an update, first do some research around the size of the update and then wait until you have sufficient data or you’re connected to Wifi. Similarly, disable automatic updates for apps you don’t use.
- Change your contract to suit your needs: If your work is very data intensive but your contract offers you countless free SMSs and free minutes, you’re on the wrong plan. Take some time to research other contracts and then choose a package that is better suited to your data usage requirements.
- Consider a multi-SIM phone: This way, your voice SIM will never use data and your data SIM is used exclusively for apps, browsing and downloads.
- Be smart about your bundles: While you might want to buy as much data as possible to avoid out-of-bundle data rates, remember that data expires. Over the course of a few months, track how much data you consume and then use this as a benchmark for your monthly data allowance.
