There’s been a lot of talk in the media recently confirming what many have suspected for a long time – their mobile data is mysteriously vanishing. Even when their devices aren’t connected to the Internet. While the work of some savvy journalists did prove that data does sometime actually disappear, there are a few other common culprits that may be causing your mobile balance to decline.
Here are a few tricks and tips you can use today to reduce your smartphone data consumption:
Social savvy: If you’re a fan of social media, it’s likely that these platforms are contributing to your lack of data. But there are ways around this. For example, using less mobile data on Instagram is as simple and going onto your Profile, selecting “Options”, then “Cellular data use” and selecting “Use less data”. Similarly, if Facebook videos are set to play automatically, they’re definitely going to be consuming a lot of data. To disable this, go to Settings and select “Off” under the tab “Videos play automatically”.
Keep an eye on apps: Apps are probably the single biggest culprit when it comes to sneaky data consumption. To mitigate this, it’s essential to configure your app data usage settings by disabling notifications for certain apps. This can be done using the “Application Manager” in your device “Settings”. It’s also a good idea to restrict apps from using background data. This can also be done in your “Settings”. Select “Data Usage” and then select the apps you’d like to restrict.
Check your email settings: Getting emails straight to your smartphone is handy but it can be costly. To reduce these costs be sure to check the size of email attachments before you download them. If you’re using the Gmail app, disabling notifications is as simple as unchecking the “Notifications” box under “Settings” in the app.
Disable automatic updates: App updates happen frequently and require a sizable amount of mobile data. It’s best to do all updates when you’re connected to Wi-Fi. You can disable automatic updates under the “Settings” tab of your device’s app store.
