A South African billionaire is taking local telcos to task for out-of-bundle charges, according to an article from MyBroadband.
Dubbing these charges “force feed payments”, Wendy Appelbaum, owner and chair of De Morgenzon Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, believes that cellular companies fail to warn subscribers when they’ve reached their monthly limit. And then forces them to pay an exorbitant premium for out-of-bundle usage. According to Appelbaum, forcing subscribers to make stop-order payments they haven’t agreed to is in contravention of the National Credit Act and amounts to fraud.
While Appelbaum is currently focusing her attention on Vodacom, she hopes her actions could also catch the eye of other operators.
The business case for TEM
The battle by Appelbaum is the perfect business case for telecoms expense management (TEM) software. Given that her argument is driven by a need for greater transparency and visibility, a cloud-based TEM platform offers all the functionality an enterprise requires to curb out-of-bundle usage and allow them to spot usage anomalies.
Recently, the CIO of one of our big clients was working remotely using his 3G dongle. Without realising it, he was synching the work he was doing to the enterprise’s cloud, which uses a large amount of data and could lead to thousands of rand worth of out-of-bundle costs. It was only after receiving a high-volume usage notification from OneView, our telecoms management system, that he realised what was happening and could stop immediately.
With a cloud-based TEM solution, users can connect without fear of overspending because notifications are set up to inform them before their data runs out. And should someone reach their data limit, a TEM platform makes it easy to load a new bundle so that the enterprise doesn’t have to incur out-of-bundle charges. With usage being tracked in real-time, an enterprise can curb out-of-bundle costs before they happen.
TEM gives you control over the operations, usage and spend on each SIM card so you don’t have to worry about receiving a sizeable bill at the end of the month without knowing when and where these costs were incurred.
