Telecoms costs are commonly in the top five line item expenses for modern organisations. As telecoms expands beyond just a fixed-line environment to incorporate services such as the internet, messaging and data, keeping tabs on business telecoms ecosystems has become even more complex.
Telecoms expense management (TEM) was traditionally managed by the IT department of the CIO, CFOs are increasingly becoming interested in telecoms expense management software as a tool to effectively manage communications across the organisation.
All to often, IT conversations don’t involve the finance department. And decisions around telecoms expense management software are made without the advice of someone with a financial background. While IT departments may have a more short-term approach to their budget, finance generally look at things from a long term perspective.
This doesn’t necessarily mean that CFOs have to “talk tech”, it means that finance must communicate with IT about the value of effectively managing their telecoms environment and understanding what technology and systems are out their to make this task easier.
With the huge amount of information being generated by all of these systems and tools, it is very hard to keep track of things from a finance perspective. And this is where technology and automated systems come into play. Those that fail to take advantage of this technology will struggle to cope.
Resisting progress?
In addition to this, many CFOs are too focused on cost; so much so that they fail to acknowledge efficiencies. What they should be doing is looking at the technology and assessing how it will make work easier and simpler to manage, which, as a result, reduces indirect costs, because everyone is able to get more done in less time.
This is especially true in big corporates where there is always a big drive to decrease budgets. When making these decisions, CFOs also need to consider that they may not always get a “tangible” return but their technology investments could result in happier staff because tedious aspects of their jobs are now automated and attention can be focused on strategic business growth.
Despite the obvious benefits of implementing a management system to handle all of this telecoms data, a lot of people kick back because they’re afraid of change. And they’re too comfortable with how they usually complete tasks to learn new processes.
The power of visibility
Nebula exists because managing a large, intricate telecoms ecosystem can be complicated. From incorrect billing to infrastructure abuse, no company wants to be spending more money on their telecoms than they need to.
Platforms like OneView, our telecoms expense and lifecycle management system, offer businesses the visibility they need not only to save money but also to streamline their telecoms environment and business processes.
