The bring-your-own-device (BYOD) trend has gained a great deal of momentum in recent years. Offering employees the freedom to work using devices they’re familiar with, lowering equipment costs for business owners and reducing administrative headaches for IT departments.
For small businesses, BYOD is a bit of a double-edged sword – on the one hand, you have a multitude of benefits, on the other, you have various security and complexity concerns that can make BYOD rather tough to get right.
Below, we’ve unpacked a few advantages and disadvantages we think you should consider when making your decision.
Lower liability: BYOD is an attractive option for SMEs because it lowers their financial burden. The onus is now on the user to pay their account in full and then claim back from the company for any business related usage that was incurred during that month.
Less admin: When a company issues a device to an individual and that person leaves the company, managing device handover can prove complicated. This is especially true in instances when employees want to keep the device, and their phone number, after moving elsewhere. With BYOD this is no longer a concern because employees own their equipment.
Financial benefits: Perhaps the most obvious benefit of embracing BYOD is the cost savings. Businesses no longer have to invest in the most high-tech hardware because employees use their own equipment.
Loss of control: Businesses have mobile policies to protect sensitive corporate information if the device is lost or stolen. With BYOD, you have less control over the security of the information traveling into, and out of, your business.
Security: The above disadvantage is closely related to security. With so many different devices connecting to your network it can be tricky to ensure that nothing sinister infiltrates your systems.
