Telkom announced on 20 October that it would zero-rate access to university online content, meaning that students would not incur any data costs. Cell C and MTN later announced that it would also absorb data costs to allow students free access to their course material even when off campus. The aim of this initiative is to help students complete the current academic year.
Commenting on Telkom’s decision to offer free data to university students, group CEO, Sipho Maseko said that it is crucial for students to be able to continue their studies in spite of the current political climate. He said, furthermore, that Telkom remains committed to education in South Africa.
Students will be able to access the university’s website at no cost until the end of the academic year.
