In their September 2016 report, Aberdeen analyses the importance of real user monitoring (RUM) as part of an overall performance management strategy.
Real User Data Leads and Really Effective Strategies to Leverage it
Figure 1 below illustrates the top challenges that businesses face in performance management.
Without understanding how performance is impacting real users, organisations lack the ability to have real insight into how their applications are running. This is where real user monitoring comes in.
Real user monitoring can take different forms – sometimes it is deployed through a client-based agent that provides user activity monitoring with deeper end-user experience analytics. Often it is deployed as a script within website or application code that can track performance and monitor user experience.
In Figure 2 below we see that organisations doing real user monitoring use performance data to inform application design at five times the rate of businesses not doing RUM.
Real User Monitoring Benefits
The advantages of RUM is shown in Table 1 below.
When it comes to application performance management and usability, the ability to monitor and understand how real users experience the application means that a company’s performance data is as real as it gets. Through the ability to monitor real users, leading companies can detect performance issues from the perspective of actual users.
