Speaking at Telkom’s annual South African Telecommunication Networks and Applications Conference (SATNAC), telecoms minister Siyabonga Cwele stated his intentions to accelerate the government’s National Development Plan (NDP).
Detailing government’s plans to speed up broadband delivery, Cwele said, “We have established a broadband war room that will fast-track the rollout of South Africa Connect, the country’s broadband policy,” adding that “ the broadband war room brings together all the departments that are responsible for the broadband.”
Together with the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government and the City of eThekwini, Cwele said they are planning to host a National Internet Governance Forum from 16 to 18 October. These forums will deliberate on areas such digital transformation in South Africa and the impact of cyber security on our economy.
The NDP came under attack in October last year for its failure to connect any of the 2 268 institutions that the government planned to bring online because the necessary infrastructure wasn’t in place.
Earlier this year the government was also criticised in parliament by the DA for the NDP’s lack of progress.
