The Next Frontier: Enterprise ICT in Africa

Enterprise Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a significant part of any ICT service provider’s portfolio of services. ICT suppliers not only have to offer effective, innovative and reliable products and services, they must also be able to partner with organisations to design, develop and implement ICT strategies that facilitate operational efficiency and strategic growth.

Of significant importance to many South African organisations, is whether their chosen ICT provider or partner can facilitate a successful move into Africa. African expansion strategies are hugely dependent on the business being able to fulfil its technology requirements in other countries. Service providers that can offer enterprise solutions to other African countries are highly attractive to organisations that wish to expand across borders.

Vodafone has recently announced its intention to expand its enterprise offering in Africa. Vodacom’s parent company has said that the development of two new regional hubs in Nigeria and Ghana will enable them to offer business ICT services to more than 50 African countries. Internet Solutions recently announced that is has connected Namibia and Nigeria to the West Africa Cable System (WACS). This will allow IS to offer its clients a wider-reaching and more stable network, and will also give increased access to the IS data centre networks in South Africa and Europe.

ICT developments in Africa are often in the news. It is widely recognised that Africa is a market well worth exploring and developing into. In order to do this effectively, businesses expanding into Africa need the support and assistance of their service providers in order to facilitate a smooth information and communication transition. ICT providers themselves are constantly developing and upgrading their capabilities in other African countries in order to meet these needs and requirements.
